Good day lovely jazz fans. I feel like roaring at the sea! No anger just pure energy. RAWR.

*This past weekend is now a blur of lovely smiling faces, a swirl of skirts and an everlasting shawl of warmth around my musical heart. The Secret Music Project amazed me every night at the Sonic Temple. So young, so intuitive and fearless! Alex, Matan, Haggai and Kaita have gone so deep into their styles that they have managed to resurface without a coat of doubt-filled sludge to keep their wings from unfolding into a universe-wide span. Their bravery and their easy camaraderie on stage are to be admired. And Saturday! The volunteers were so giving and smart. The audience was welcoming and social. (We almost reached last year's numbers even with the huge competition in the city - Festival of Fire! Ladies in Blues! HPX! Thaw! Creative Summit! LiveART! etc etc - it's hard to compete with ALL of that. But we did, haha.) Maria still holds her majesty as a intense force field around her soft creativity. Alex Conde killed it. He really did. His sense of timing, tasteful flourishes and musical generousity (he really liked playing with violinist Gina Burgess) was breathtaking and refreshing. The rest of the audience seemed to agree. The dance party was a wee thin, but the ladies and I were quite ecstatic by the end of the night. We love this community.

*I have a treat for you. The other month I signed up for quite a few US National Public Radio e-letters, and the other day I received a link to this: The Year's Best New Jazz podcast. After you listen to it please send me notes if you feel like sharing how you like it or hate it.

*FYI - Lulu is in Copenhagen attending the super-supreme-o world music conference in the world - WOMEX. She wrote this to us yesterday, "Just a quick note, my lovelies... as I take a breather in between sessions... to let you both know that we should be PROUD of what we do and how we do it ... with this international perspective on what other folks and orgs are up to makes me very confident that we are indeed a world class festival!!" Cool, huh?!

*Spread the jazzeast love - If you know someone who would like to receive Jazz In Halifax, send me a note or direct them to www.jazzeast.com

02. PRESENTS & PRESENCE | AN EVENING IN BLUE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This association is ready to exchange its plane for a rocket. With the people we have in place, JazzEast is growing exponentially. We have plenty of elbow grease and time; we have business plans that are progressive and groundbreaking; and we have a great foundation of funding (thank you TD and government!). YET in order for us to blast through the current atmosphere that could bind us to the earth, we need more people to join us. What we require from you is belief and then financial support.

Given the current climate of Conservative attitudes toward government arts funding and the predicted decline in corporate sponsorships, JazzEast is taking a cautionary step. We are not panicked by any means, but we realigning our approach to come in synch with a principle we already follow: each person who is involved in JazzEast is JazzEast. With many people contributing what they can, JazzEast is able to continue with its plans as excellent arts presenters, a cultural-economic force in Halifax and as active supporters of simpatico performing arts members.

Everything we do to entice you will be fun. We are charmers at JazzEast and we take pleasure in romancing you into a deeper relationship. One of our initiatives takes place in December. It is called An Evening in Blue: JazzEast's Gala Fundraiser for Music Education. The top reasons why people come to the gala each are:

• Purchase Holiday gifts made by local artisans and others at the silent auction
• Listen to music - Laila Biali Trio is our special guest
• Continue or begin relationships with fellow members of the cultural community
• Eat an excellent dinner with friends

JazzEast believes in music education, in fostering a community that is close and thought-filled, in inspiring people to unveil their creativity...and we believe in art not having to oppose business. If you agree, then you are definitely invited to our gala.

Education supporters that are party lovers can purchase tickets at the JazzEast office at 1313 Hollis St or by calling 902-492-2225. Education supporters that are party poopers can show their love by donating to JazzEast. Any staff person can help you.

03. THE CREATIVE MIND IN HALIFAX | CREATIVE MUSIC WORKSHOP
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All people interested in exercising their creative minds are invited to take part in this session of the Creative Music Workshop. Jerry Granelli is a seasoned pro in facilitating the process. He has been invited by large corporations and wee groups to speak on his approached. We are lucky to have him. It is as if he is our yoga instructor or that voice that always has the most inventive and healthy answer to our questions. You do not have to be a musician to want that, and improvisation methods have proven to be an excellent stretch for the mind.

CREATIVE PROCESS SESSION
November 7-8 | 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM | $75

The Creative Music Workshop's Creative Process session will focus on the foundations of the CMW teachings: the fundamental skills for playing music of any kind will be developed through various creative process exercises:

Listening
Communication
Basic pulse work
Risk taking
Working with fear and self consciousness
Commitment
Working toward the goal of HEARING what to play rather than THINKING about what to play

This is an entry level CMW, but all students are encouraged to attend.
