Good day lovely jazz fans. The ladies of JazzEast love concert time, especially when we are selling Really well. Do not snooze, my friends.

*At the Harry Manx concert, we are going to have 5 LURKING FIGURES observing our concerted efforts, looking to see how we can make your experience even better. They are members of a super team from the Management Without Borders program at Dalhousie University. Masters students from different disciplines (in our case business administration, library & information science and public administration) choose a client and then form a team to work on a project. JazzEast is concerned with data collection, of understanding your whims and wishes in order to up our game. After our meeting with the MWB experts on Tuesday, I am sure we got the good ones. Be kind to them and try to look your best.

02. HARRY MANX – ONE NIGHT SOLO PERFORMANCE
----------------------------------------------------------------------

MANX IS POPULAR WITH THE MEDIA.

Did you see the article in the HERALD today? Stephen Cooke penned his magic once again and sketched for us a clearer picture of our blues-roots-raga-man. He sounds super friendly and on the path of the Buddha. The world is a nice looking place with Manx eyes. Most of the article talks about the new album, which is on sale at the show, but only once does MR. Cooke mention JazzEast, at the end with the ticket information (tsk, tsk). It is a good thing we are a confident association and that the Herald had already listed the event under Arts in Brief with our name all over it.

Tomorrow, show-day Thursday, Stephanie Domet is adding her colours to the Manx portrait. During MAINSTREET (3-5pm), Harry Manx is sitting in the CBC Halifax studio and chatting about his album and concerts. I am very curious to hear what else he has to say.

MANX ANECDOTES - FROM CUTIES IN OUR COMMUNITY

*A member and music lover Merle Lister was in the office today. She had a good tale to tell. A friend of hers drove all the way to Moncton to see Manx because she was not going to be in Halifax for our concert. That is love and dedication, man. Our community is the best.
*A dear member and uber jazz fan called today to see if we think he should see Manx. He said that money is tight but Everyone is talking about the concert. He was torn between the not liking blues-folk music and not wanting to miss out. We told him that it is not a jazz show, but that Manx is a master guitar player and is known to be an engaging performer. After some hesitation, he said that sometimes you need to branch out and see something different. We whole-heartedly agree.
*Sarah's father and brother have been taking guitar lessons together. Instead of lessons this week, the two students and their teacher are taking in the beauty that is Harry Manx. The picture they will make is a little too adorable.

SHOULD YOU WAIT TO BUY AT THE DOOR?

The concert is selling very well, yet there are still some tickets left. If you leave it last minute, come down early. The doors open at 7:30 PM. If you are a member (or want to become one), remember you can buy directly from the JazzEast office until 5:00 PM.

HARRY MANX
blues / folk / world
"Mysticssippi" blues man Harry Manx has been called an "essential link" between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to. Blending Indian folk melodies with blues, a sprinkle of gospel, and compelling grooves, Manx's "mysticssippi" flavour is hard to resist, easy to digest and keeps audiences coming back for more.

Voted one of the top three guitarists in the world by Guitar Player magazine, Martín is an accomplished musician. He has 20 albums to his credit and a multitude of books and DVDs. ANDREA REDMOND, Jazzed Up
September 2 - 30, 2009

The portraits for “Jazzed Up” were born of two loves: Music and reading. Redmond grew up listening to an eclectic body of music with the likes of her mothers piano playing of old war songs and her father’s affinity to his chest-vibrating record of bag pipes and drums. Among so many other record albums they heard Peter Gun, The Kingston Trio, The Tijuana Brass and Louis Armstrong. Her parents shared their love of music with the family, even though sometimes they seemed lost in each other when one of their favourites played. She loved it all and still does, but has a particular liking of Jazz music. Influenced not only by her families musical tastes, Redmonds' reading also inspired Jazzed up. Intrigued by the biography of Ethel Waters', Redmond was impressed by Ethel’s unconquerable faith, battling poverty and racial hatred to become one of the greatest performers of all time. Jazzed Up is a series of portraits of Jazz Artists. Not exclusively a portrait painter, Redmond has an affinity to painting faces. “The first thing I paint, and almost to the point of completion, are the eyes…they give the piece a heart and soul and only when I’m satisfied with them have I made a commitment to finish a face” Redmond states.
"When I painted Louis Armstrong, Clifford Brown and Lee Morgan I really liked “polishing the brass and polishing their cheeks”. The instruments are part of the men who played them. Before I painted the portrait, “Just Ethel”, I used her face to create the portrait “Rosetta Sings” because I wanted to put a face to a name after hearing the beautiful duet, “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us." The body of work is completed with two ladies I could see hanging around the clubs; a young dance hall dancer named Sylvia and a beautiful being absorbed by music." Artist Biography: Andrea is an emerging, self-taught artist. Since 2007 she has shown work at Seaside Gallery at Shaw’s Landing, West Dover, Tantallon Library, Glen Artist Show and Sale in Glen Haven, as well as Group Shows-Cross Pollination at the Hydrostone Gallery, a juried Group Show at Art Sales and Rental and All Things Big and Small at Jo Beale Gallery, Peggy’s Cove. Presently, Andrea has works at Art Sales and Rental, Hollis St. and Jo Beale Gallery, Peggy’s Cove. Her paintings can be found in private collections across Canada and abroad. Andrea was raised in Glen Margaret, Nova Scotia, and continues to live in the community today. With an increased concern for the environment, she, and husband, live "off the grid” in a solar and wind powered home. They share their space with a menagerie of cats, dogs, chickens and goats. She notes that while painting calls for lots of imagination it doesn’t require much electricity. Redmond can be reached at reddythree@aol.com and her work can be viewed until September 30th at The Corridor Gallery or online at http://vans.ednet.ns.ca/artist_pages/aredmond.html. The Corridor Gallery is located at 1113 Marginal Road, Halifax, NS in the office of Visual Arts Nova Scotia and is open Monday through Friday 9am-5pm. Visual Arts Nova Scotia supports visual art and artists in Nova Scotia. For further information on the Corridor Gallery or this exhibition please contact Crystal (902) 423-4694 or vans@visualarts.ns.ca.

B. CMW – CREATIVE MUSIC WORKSHOP
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Every summer, novice and experienced musicians gather in Halifax to focus on the creative process, developing artistic voice and instrumental mastery through game-playing, improvising, listening, composing, playing in ensembles and talking about music. An experienced faculty led by seminal percussionist Jerry Granelli provides energy and direction - with the aid of clinicians composed of high-profile Atlantic Jazz Festival performers. Players from all music traditions participate and find themselves challenged and inspired by what CMW has to offer. Participants are rewarded by a final performance on the jazz festivals closing day, showcasing their new work in front of a supportive audience. All instruments, voices and musical styles played by people of all ages and abilities are welcome to apply.

For more information, registration or to receive a CMW brochure, email: cmw@jazzeast.com
