------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good day lovely jazz fans. I have so much to share with you.
*Live recordings of The Bad Plus, Lee Konitz and other jazz happy people. Subscriber Jerry Walsh sent me a message that I want to pass along. I think he would like you to know about it. "Kasia, I was just checking out the Village Vanguard website and picked up the attached below regarding their live broadcasts. Includes the schedule for the next few months." Jerry. I have posted the details on our website under news.
*101 Ways To Get Into 'Jazz' - Another American on-line purveyor of jazz (NPR) caught my eye, too. This is what they have to say. "Attempting to make your way into jazz can be daunting, but the writer and cultural critic Gary Giddins has rendered it a bit more approachable. His new book, Jazz (co-written with Scott DeVeaux), is a guide for novice listeners and longtime fans alike. For this week's Take Five, Giddins picked five songs from his list of 101 entryway jazz recordings, where Louis Armstrong rubs shoulders with Jason Moran and George Russell. Elsewhere this week: George Shearing with Marian McPartland, the Vijay Iyer trio at WBGO, and "Body And Soul." Enjoy."—Patrick Jarenwattananon, NPR Music.
*"Does jazz take itself too seriously?" - On our Canadian front and in our radio land, CBC's Tonic has asked the serious question. Sarah sent me the link, I followed it and found a lively discussion. I plan to contribute to it and invite you to do the same.
*Jack Waller carries a torch for us Canadians. Some cool news about JazzFest volunteer, Jack Waller came to us recently. He was asked to carry the 2010 Winter Games Olympic torch by RBC!
*Musicians send us links to your videos on youtube. JazzEast has created a YouTube channel called JazzEast Rising Moving Pictures. One of the purposes of the channel is to feature local music videos. Once I have some good stuff, we will promote its existence to the world.
*Did you know that TD Canada Trust has extended their commitment to JazzFest for another 5 years? Great news, hey? We are so thrilled to have their long term commitment.

02. SILENT AUCTION TID BITS | AN EVENING IN BLUE UPDATE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week has been present heaven. Sarah and her team of super generous, go-getting people have been dropping off items for the silent auction. The extra desk in Lulu's office looks like the coolest store in the world dumped its load of goodies onto it. The three items I can tell you about are...
1 modern style blue suede chair (super cool!!!). Value $1200. Donated by Statement.
1 Denon 2-32 Wireless Network Music System plays back digital music for both PC and Mac. Includes 7000 Internet Radio Stations, AM/FM tuner and Command and Control for your iPod. Remote control included (this is my favourite!!!!!). Value $600. Donated by Peak Audio.
40 person cruise on the Mar II (I love water and parties on water). Value $1000. Donated by Murphy's on the Water.
The rest are surprises. I hope my choices for this sneak peek demonstrate that we are cool when it comes to gifts.
Another piece of information I wanted to share falls in line with what I said about Sarah's teams. She has been meeting with some folks from the Board regularly. Lulu and I went to their meeting last night and we found out why Sarah has been keeping them to herself. Andrew Killawee, Liz Naylor, Eleanor Fitzpartrick and Martine Durier Copp have been working on the gala since last year, and they are the most delightful committee I have ever witnessed. One of the reasons why this event is going to be very special is due to them and their smarts wrapped in fun-loving generousity. Here's a sample of a communication Liz sent to the board today.
"The pieces of JazzEast's 6th Annual Gala Fundraiser are coming together. The Silent Auction items are in, final details for the Menu are being worked out, the Flow Plan (how we will move into and through the event) is taking shape, CMW participation is in the works, Decorations to create ambiance and set the tone for the evening are gathering, Gala Committee members have chosen their Wardrobes!!!! This is going to be a wonderful event!!!"
FYI - I made a special gala page on our website. Click on the gala title below to visit. I hope you like it.

In the distant yet near future: January 2010
Canadian New Music Forum 2010 - Halifax is this year's host of the annual new music conference and concerts. Paul Cram, Lulu and I attended last year in Toronto and it was fantastic! The people, the ideas and the music were all inspiring and smart. This year's theme is diversity and programming. I think ALL arts in the Maritimes should take part in this forum.

CarShareHFX deals
The other night, Lulu and I went to the CarShare headquarters on Agricola Street and were brought into the eco-smart world of CarShare. We were impressed by the ease of the service, the friendliness of the lady who whisked us through the orientation and the hybrid car they have at that site (it was so Star Trek). Two days later we used a car in the 1313 lot and the experience was so stress free. We needed a car immediately, went on-line to book it and ten minutes later we were driving to our destination. Fob in, Fob out. Click here to read how we will support your wise enviro-decisions.
Strategic Planning
Last Sunday, the JazzEast crew met for a 6-hour strategic planning session (part one), and the results were cohesive, challenging and inspiring. We have some really intelligent people around our table. I hope to post some of these savvy decisions on jazzeast.com before the new year.
Make Your Association
I want to share with you a story of how a JazzEast e-newsletter subscriber become MORE. "One day I realized that JazzEast loves music and I love music. JazzEast thrills in its community and I am proud of it too. Perhaps, together we can make beautiful things happen." The subscriber thought about the future while on a walk, in a car, on a bus and lying in a bed, and after considering time and money the jazz lover became...
A. a member ($25)
B. a patron member ($50-500)
C. a volunteer (FREE)
D. a passionate ambassadour of all things JazzEast (FREE)
