Q: What does saturnalia, candles, applications, friends and generousity have in common? Jazz In Halifax for Thursday, December 3
Take a lesson from Jerry. Three is the magic number (in the beginning) and the application is IT.
01. GREETINGS - Bill Frisell live on the radio, a good question from All About Jazz forum, the union
02. FINE GIFTS, MUSIC & PEOPLE - Lucky Rabbit Pottery, blacksmith/sculptor John Little, Laila & Herald
03. APPLICATIONS DUE - New relationships, the trio and the concert, CMW style
04. THIS IS HOW WE DO IT - Holidays with The Family JazzEast
05. JAZZ AROUND TOWN - Answer: their hot, cool or funky jazz delights are just around the corner
06. JAZZEAST IS COOL - New Board of Directors, CarShare treats
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good day lovely jazz fans. Server blues and gala sunshine.
*Our server has decided to express itself, and it is moody. Some emails arrive at their destination, some are thrown back.
*The Bill Frisell Trio In Concert: Stealthy And Spontaneous - "When guitarist Bill Frisell plays with Kenny Wollesen and Tony Scherr, he doesn't let his bandmates know which tunes they're performing that night, or how to perform them, or really anything else in advance. He might be more forthcoming if he himself knew what he was going to play, but he usually doesn't even know that either. Frisell just acts on the first song that pops into his head -- and somehow, it works itself out splendidly. If you don't believe us, hear for yourself: JazzSet this week features the Bill Frisell trio in concert. Also this week: Sheila Jordan, Vince Guaraldi and post-Thanksgiving travel tunes. Enjoy." - Patrick Jarenwattananon, NPR Music
*What do you look for in a jazz festival? All About Jazz on-line asked this question in their forum. We found it because a Google alert told us that someone mentioned our festival's name. Thanks Jake Hanlon. Our eyebrows and mouth corners moved upward after reading people's comments, and I figured that 1/ you might find it interesting and 2/ you might want to join the forum in general.

02. FINE GIFTS, MUSIC AND PEOPLE | AN EVENING IN BLUE UPDATE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This kind of excitement makes me see chocolate candies in the Barrington streetlights and feel alright with getting an email from every bank in the world saying that I have 1 message waiting. Tickets are selling well, cool people are coming to the party and the little treats we have gathered for everyone are really thoughtful. The gala committee has done an outstanding job.
This week's teasers for zee gala fantastica are...
1. Lucky Rabbitt Pottery donated a sweet beautiful owl dish ($75)
2. Blacksmith sculptor John Little has given us a surprise. Do you remember the album Sanctuary Trio's Jeff Reilly and Jerry Granelli recorded performances with John's sound sculptures and their main instruments - bass clarinet and drums? They called it Iron Sky and you can see some of the performances in the documentary Colin MacKenzie made on Jerry (we have the videos on our JazzEast Rising Moving Pictures YouTube channel). John has agreed to donate a sound sculpture to the auction and we gladly accepted. ($Priceless)
FYI - Laila Biali was interviewed today by Andrea Nemetz of the Herald. Look for it in tomorrow's paper. Also, I made a special gala page on our website. Click on the gala title below to visit. I hope you like it.

03. APPLICATIONS DUE | CREATIVE MUSIC WORKSHOP
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jerry has a lot going on -- in his approach to education and music creation. Last week, I went down to his studio to figure out what the December CMW workshop is going to offer. I have decided to chop his rich offering into wee morsels.
A NEW RELATIONSHIP - The bringing of Simon and Dani to CMW is the beginning of a new relationship. Jerry is impressed with these two young men's approaches to music and education; they have gone through the fundamentals-to-application process and are now composing to great effect. If Jerry is the professor, then Simon and Dani are the new brilliant T.A.s.
COMPOSING - Due to experience and a desire to always stretch, Jerry's workshop style is to help each person view the group as a natural and excellent resonator. Working within a group can lead one to genuine applications of the fundamentals. The task for each student is to move with the fundamentals in mind while interacting with one's surroundings.
THE TRIO - Three is an overall excellent number. In this case, it is the best group formation due to the amount of space it provides for each member. A trio lays bare the possibilities and provides more room to stretch.
THE CONCERT - On Saturday night, the new relationship of Fisk-Oore-Granelli moves to the stage out of the classroom. This is the trio's first time together as a trio, thus the music promises to be fresh and to unfold those challenges experienced by students in the workshop.
THE ART OF THE TRIO

Canadian New Music Forum 2010 - Partnering Diversity: An International Creative Music Conference presented by The Canadian New Music Network | Sir James Dunn Theatre, Dalhousie Arts Centre
Halifax is this year's host of the annual new music conference and concerts. Paul Cram, Lulu and I attended last year in Toronto and it was fantastic! The people, the ideas and the music were all inspiring and smart. This year's theme is diversity and programming. I think ALL arts in the Maritimes should take part in this forum.

NEW! JazzEast Board of Directors
I forgot to tell you that the Annual General Meeting was held and a new Board was elected. Four members attended, which I guess is a record breaker. (JazzEast is a different beast from the rest.) Yet, quorum was met and these are the representatives of family JazzEast.
President - Dr. Christopher Elson
V.P. Development - Olga Manzoni
V.P. Programming - Dustin LindenSmith
Secretary - Thomas Curran
Treasurer - Wayne Pittman
Directors - Peter Butler, Martine Durier Copp, Eleanor Fitzpatrick, Mark Gosine, Arthur Irwin, Andrew Killawee, Liz Naylor and Nick Wilkinson
CarShareHFX deals
The other night, Lulu and I went to the CarShare headquarters on Agricola Street and were brought into the eco-smart world of CarShare. We were impressed by the ease of the service, the friendliness of the lady who whisked us through the orientation and the hybrid car they have at that site (it was so Star Trek). Two days later we used a car in the 1313 lot and the experience was so stress free. We needed a car immediately, went on-line to book it and ten minutes later we were driving to our destination. Fob in, Fob out. Click here to read how we will support your wise enviro-decisions.
