November's Thursdays, Havana's Nights, creativity's feast...and other jazz bits

JAZZ IN HALIFAX | Wednesday November 4 2009
Halifax is one long festival this week. Some nights there is something good to see every hour.

01. GREETINGS - Your entertainment agent, JE AGM and new Stayner's pizzazz
02. HOORAH FOR MUSIC EDUCATION - What a TV producer, poet and fortune 50 CEO have in common
03. MUSIC, ART & LIFE - A weekend treat for the creative-entrenched and -curious
04. JAZZ AROUND TOWN - So much to see/hear!
05. JAZZEAST IS COOL - This way to make your association

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good day lovely jazz fans.

*This week, the odd-minded and the hot-bodied are sending high voltage currents into Halifax's jazz stream. Our city's purveyors of out-there music (Jerry Granelli, Janice Jackson, Steven Naylor and Paul Cram) will cast moments of inspiring ripples and make a concerted effort to destabilize our creative mindfield. Jeff Goodspeed and his dedicated band of supporters of young musicians and Cuban music will lower the Lord Nelson's heating bill with all of their music and dancing. This is a big night for them and for Halifax. We encourage all of you to take a dip.

*JazzEast is ready to lay bare its past year of activities and to vote for its new Board of Directors at the Annual General Meeting on November 17, 5:30 PM, Dal Tech.

*Lulu thinks themes can be over done, but sometimes they sneak into your plans anyway. The Thursdays at Stayner's is now in the Jazz Around Town mix, and if you pay attention you will notice every concert except for Swingology's is lead by an incredible bassist. Bass composers are one of my favourite groups of musicians.

*Spread the jazzeast love - If you know someone who would like to receive Jazz In Halifax, send me a note or direct them to www.jazzeast.com

02. HOORAH FOR MUSIC EDUCATION | AN EVENING IN BLUE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dress up and make your applause the rallying hoorah for music education. An essential component of JazzEast's mandate is exposing minds and ears to cool sights and sounds. Like many arts organizations, we try to narrow the void found in traditional educational realms by using our workshops as new foundations. Our approaches are unique (Creative Music Workshop) and community-focused (JazzLabs at the libraries), and, most importantly, growing yearly. JazzEast fully realizes the benefits of music education to our association and community.

A grounding in the arts will help our children to see; to bring a uniquely human perspective to science and technology. In short, it will help them as they grow smarter to also grow wiser. - Robert E. Allen, Chairman & C.E.O., AT & T

Yet, let us not relegate the beauty of learning music to the young. If you are like me, getting older is magical in another kind of way. I have seen the bravery of an adult standing, shaking at the edge of her fear yet blowing into a saxophone-for the first time-beside her peers facing a large audience and having the time of her life. Learning music helps all of us to dig deep into our ageless souls and fortify our path in the other parts of life.

When gripping grief the heart doth wound,
And doleful dumps the mind oppress,
Then music with her silver sound
With speedy help doth lend redress.
-Richard Edwards, U.S. poet

The top reasons why people come to the gala each year are:

• Purchase Holiday gifts made by local artisans and others at the silent auction
• Listen to music - Laila Biali Trio is our special guest
• Continue or begin relationships with fellow members of the cultural community
• Eat an excellent dinner with friends

We would love to see you there, in the ballroom, having a great time.

“Music is an essential part of everything we do. Like puppetry, music has an abstract quality which speaks to a worldwide audience in a wonderful way that nourishes the soul.” - Jim Henson, television producer and puppeteer

03. MUSIC, ART AND LIFE | CREATIVE MUSIC WORKSHOP
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes Susan Hunter says it the best. "The Creative Process, Nov 7 & 8, is the perfect entry point if you are new to CMW. All musical styles and levels of playing are welcome. Also - many artists from other disciplines, as well as non-musicians/artists, have participated and taken away new insights into their own approach to music, art and life. It's all about what it takes to improvise - perhaps one of life's more useful skills! Treat yourself to a weekend of creativity." From the 1313 e-news.

CREATIVE PROCESS SESSION
November 7-8 | 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM | $75

The Creative Music Workshop's Creative Process session will focus on the foundations of the CMW teachings: the fundamental skills for playing music of any kind will be developed through various creative process exercises:

Listening
Communication
Basic pulse work
Risk taking
Working with fear and self consciousness
Commitment
Working toward the goal of HEARING what to play rather than THINKING about what to play

This is an entry level CMW yet all students are encouraged to attend.

In the distant yet near future: January 2010

Canadian New Music Forum 2010 - Halifax is this year's host of the annual new music conference and concerts. Paul Cram, Lulu and I attended last year in Toronto and it was fantastic! The people, the ideas and the music were all inspiring and smart. This year's theme is diversity and programming. I think ALL arts in the Maritimes should take part in this forum.
