02. HARRY MANX – ONE NIGHT SOLO PERFORMANCE

Harry Manx is cool. I like this wee description of how he became enamoured by the blues…
“Originally from the isle of man, HARRY Manx relocated to Canada as a child and, while still in his teens, had a life-changing brush with the blues. ‘I saw Buddy Guy and Junior Wells in 1970, and it knocked me over,’ he says. ‘I’d seen some rock and roll, but I’d never seen anything like that. The clothes, the attitude, the music, all made a big impression.’ Manx’s connection with the blues intensified a few years later when he got a job at Toronto’s historic El Mocambo Tavern, a gig that exposed him to scores of legendary bluesmen and women.” guitarplayer.com

JazzEast has been reviewing its programming and one little diamond that shines so nicely is our weekly Thursday Night Jazz at Stayner’s. Various jazz community members come out from all of their different backgrounds to listen to what is going on in our town.

August 27 – 9:00 PM – Two By Two (saxophonist Dustin Lindensmith, guitarist Ross Burns, organist Matt Myer and drummer Paul Keddy)
During the festival, Two By Two (and spoken word artist ) sold out The Company House, and the last time they played at Stayner’s, the crowd was delighted. Post-modern fusions of funk, jazz and blues are performed by a quartet playing a classic Hammond B3 organ sound. Two by Two's repertoire is selected from composers such as Ray Charles, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, James Brown and Stevie Wonder along with originals from the group.

THE PARRSBORO UPSTREAM JAZZ SESSIONS
Presented by Upstream Music Association and the Parrsboro Citizen’s Band Association
AUGUST 25-29, 2009 | Parrsboro, NS
Welcome to a new concept of summer music fun. This year’s Parrsboro Upstream Sessions will take participants down roads less traveled by the jazz industry to tap well-springs of creativity. The New Jazz Orchestra, The Funk Ensemble and Silent Film Orchestra represent distinct points of departure where experienced musicians of all ages can discover new directions to take home with them for lifelong study. Participants are invited to participate in all 3 sessions or specialize in a specific area of interest while auditing the rest. The registration fee is $150 CAD. All ages and voice/instruments are welcome. Improvisational skill and note reading are assets. Space is limited and applicants will be chosen based on experience, enthusiasm and instrumentation. Session 1
Free Jazz Orchestra
10 am to 1 pm Tuesday to Friday
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Paul Cram, UJO will start with basic listening and playing exercises, where players reveal their originality through rapid responses in the moment. From there strategies will be developed to organize sounds and effectively harness the forces at hand. The sessions will utilize “conduction”, an approach to conducting that channels the energies of the players into improvisations that can have us charging over grooves with shouting vamps to storms, waves, fire and brimstone. In contrast the sessions will delve into more abstract expressionist solo, duo, trio and free improvisations along with serial compositional methods: One page scores with graphic notation will be developed, played through and analyzed to show what works. Students are encouraged to contribute to a collective composition. We will play, organize and rehearse this work along with faculty compositions into a UJO Concert on Saturday night.
Session 2
Funk Ensemble
2 PM to 5 pm Tuesday to Friday
This ensemble will be led by Rick Waychesko , who has extensive knowledge of the fusion jazz funk songbook. The Ensemble will learn the music of Mike Stern and other luminaries of the genre. In contrast to the more freewheeling UJO, the emphasis here will be on precision and getting the music tight. Everyone will be encouraged to participate, although the funk ensemble session could inevitably divide into groups according to experience and skills.
Session 3
Silent Film Orchestra
7 pm to 9 pm Tuesday to Friday
There is a school of thought that says that jazz came out of silent movies. If you have never experienced the vertigo and panic of playing to a relentlessly changing medium, this is for you. Even if you have experienced the terror it’s a compelling challenge that never goes away. We will be working primarily with Buster Keaton’s classic 1928 film Steamboat Bill Jr. The score is a “short” written for the film by Upstream’s Paul Cram. The score has lots of thematic material to play but leaves room for improvisation and “Micky Mousing*” with the characters.
*Mickey Mousing: where music follows on-screen movement.

DALHOUSIE CORO COLLEGIUM
Audition date: August 31
Directed by Gary Ewer, the Dalhousie Coro Collegium is a 90-member mixed-voice choral ensemble. The choir is auditioning for new singers for their 2009-2010 performance season. The major repertoire for the year will include Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols” and the Handel “Coronation Anthems”, among other works. Those interested in auditioning for placement should visit the Dalhousie Department of Music website to sign up for an audition time, and for other information. 2010 ARTS PRESENTERS CONFERENCE (APAP) – CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Deadline: August 28, 2009
The Audience and Market Development Office of the Canada Council for the Arts will coordinate a booth for Canadian agents representing performing artists at the 2010 Arts Presenters Conference (APAP) in New York, USA. The dates for APAP 2010 are January 8-12, 2010. Ten agents representing performing artists will be selected to take part in the Canada Council delegation to APAP 2010. If you wish to be part of this delegation, please submit an application to the Audience and Market Development Office postmarked no later than August 28, 2009. The booth will be registered under the banner of the Canada Council for the Arts. The Canada Council will cover the booth costs and will also cover the registration fee, transportation costs and per diems (contribution to accommodation and meals for five days at the flat rate of $125/day) for the members of the delegation. The Audience and Market Development Office will manage booth logistics as well as planned activities for the delegation. Each member of the delegation is responsible for making their own travel and hotel arrangements.
Eligibility - In order to be eligible to participate in the delegation, your agency must have a minimum of three professional Canadian performing artists/groups on your roster, and you must have been in operation for a minimum of two years.
How to Apply 1/Use the Audience and Market Development Travel Grants application form, available at: www.canadacouncil.ca/development, 2/Clearly outline your rationale for participating in this event (i.e. career development plans for a specific artist, upcoming tour, collaboration, etc.), 3/Submit information about your roster of performing artists/groups.
Selection Process and Criteria - The selection process will be managed internally based on recommendations made by the Coordinator of Audience and Market Development in consultation with the Performing Arts Sections. Decisions will be based on the overall merit of the application (i.e. described rationale for participation, appropriateness of the organization’s roster) in comparison with the other applications and availability of resources. Final decisions will also reflect a balanced representation of diverse artists and regions of Canada.
Apprenticeship - There will be an apprenticeship component to this delegation in order to support the development of new professionals in the sector. The Canada Council will provide a travel subsidy for one apprentice to join the delegation. If you want to propose someone as an apprentice, you should include in your application a CV for the individual you are proposing, as well as a rationale for their participation at APAP 2010. Support will be contingent on your organization being selected to participate in the delegation.
Additional participants - In some circumstances, agencies may want to send more than one person. The Canada Council for the Arts will only cover the costs of one person per agency, unless an apprentice with your agency is applied for and approved. Any other additional participants are at the expense of your agency.
For Other Activities - For all other activities that are important throughout the year, Canadian agents can apply for transportation costs through the regular grants program, Audience and Market Development Travel Grants. These requests will be managed in the usual manner, as outlined in the program guidelines. Agents should submit a separate application covering these other activities.

GO NORTH! STUDIO & GALLERY TOUR 2009 Call for Submissions

Eyelevel Gallery requests submissions for Time Will Tell, a series of five public performance-based works to take place in conjunction with the fourth annual Go North! Studio and Gallery Tour on September 12, 2009. We are seeking public performance-based work responding to the current context of Halifax’s North End by engaging with the physical environment and social history of this neighbourhood. Local emerging artists, established artists and students are encouraged to apply. Selected artists will be paid an artist fee of $500 for their project and a $100.00 material fee. Funding for these projects from the HRM was only recently confirmed, so artists are encouraged to propose works that are already in progress or that respond with spontaneity to the short time-frame of this call for submissions.
Application Guidelines - Please submit the following as part of your proposal:
1. A written project description including the concept, script of the performance, intended materials if required, and any other relevant information (no more than 250 words).
Please Note: If there is an installation element to your public performance-based work you must have the site pre-approved by the property manager or landlord as necessary.
2. CV or resume outlining previous art experience

Every summer, novice and experienced musicians gather in Halifax to focus on the creative process, developing artistic voice and instrumental mastery through game-playing, improvising, listening, composing, playing in ensembles and talking about music. An experienced faculty led by seminal percussionist Jerry Granelli provides energy and direction - with the aid of clinicians composed of high-profile Atlantic Jazz Festival performers. Players from all music traditions participate and find themselves challenged and inspired by what CMW has to offer. Participants are rewarded by a final performance on the jazz festivals closing day, showcasing their new work in front of a supportive audience. All instruments, voices and musical styles played by people of all ages and abilities are welcome to apply.
