23RD TD CANADA TRUST ATLANTIC JAZZ FESTIVAL
July 10-18, 2009

*Volunteers needed! We are urgently seeking volunteers for this year’s festival. If you wish to help in the recruitment, here is a little something to inspire participation.

BE A PART OF THE SHOW! JazzFest is seeking volunteers for its festival teams
With over 20 crews to join, volunteering at the JazzFest is bound to satisfy your itch for learning new skills, making new friends or helping JazzEast to promote live and culturally rich music. Phil Theriault is the JazzFest Coordinator and he can assist you in figuring out where you fit into the festival family or atlanticjazzfestival.ca can streamline your registration if you already have an idea. There are 40 shows taking place under the big top and 40 night time shows taking place in different venues around town. There are a couple of quiet churches, a few lively bars and one big and festive festival tent. Maybe there is a show in which you would like to take part or maybe a style of music that peeks your curiousity? The Atlantic Jazz Festival has a nation-wide reputation for its artist hospitality (due to its volunteers) and fine musical selection. We invite you to join us. Contact: Phil Theriault, Volunteer Coordinator, 902 992 2225 x 6, 902 492 7216 (Volunteer Centre), phil@jazzeast.com

*The hot tickets for the festival are: Oliver Jones (SOLD OUT!), Kenny Garrett (yes! People are starting to understand his greatness!), the party-people Shuffle Demons with Idlers and The New York uber-cool trio The Bad Plus are tied and Joe Louis Walker with Garrett Mason are showing their might against Sir Paul.

*Martine Durier-Copp has reported that her team has signed-up 78 (!) local businesses to participate in the JazzWindows competition and they anticipate more! Haligonians will be visually delighted by spectacular window displays all over town. An artist (Iain Keith Murray) sent me photos of his Certainly Cinnamon evolution-of-jazz window paintings and yowza they are goooood!

*THE PARADE! Saturday, July 11 at 12noon people such as you and your friends will gather at Victoria Park (the one across from the Public Gardens) and frolic down the streets to the festival tent where Samba Nova will kick the free daytime concerts into high groove. It’s short and sweet, colourful and rhythmic and (the best part) Spring Garden Road is for pedestrians only.

*If you think our workshops are for musicians, you are wrong (mostly). Some are definitely for musicians, but most are open. I plan to stop by some of them. Stories are great!

08. CMW – CREATIVE MUSIC WORKSHOP
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Every summer, novice and experienced musicians gather in Halifax to focus on the creative process, developing artistic voice and instrumental mastery through game-playing, improvising, listening, composing, playing in ensembles and talking about music. An experienced faculty led by seminal percussionist Jerry Granelli provides energy and direction - with the aid of clinicians composed of high-profile Atlantic Jazz Festival performers. Players from all music traditions participate and find themselves challenged and inspired by what CMW has to offer. Participants are rewarded by a final performance on the jazz festivals closing day, showcasing their new work in front of a supportive audience. All instruments, voices and musical styles played by people of all ages and abilities are welcome to apply.

For more information, registration or to receive a CMW brochure, email: cmw@jazzeast.com
