American jazz, Mediterranean mix, Russian art songs all for you TONIGHT!...and more
JAZZ IN HALIFAX | Thursday November 12 2009
Why do all of the rare cultural events have to happen in one night? We can do it, though. There are plenty of strategies to see it ALL.
01. GREETINGS - Spanish jazz cruise, Duane Andrews on youtube, etc
02. LAILA BIALI AND STING - Our gala guest's performance with Sting in NYC
03. NEW GUEST CLINICIANS - CMW brings you two new pulses this winter
04. JAZZ AROUND TOWN - Tonight is HOT and the rest of the month ain't too shabby either
05. JAZZEAST IS COOL - This way to make your association
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good day lovely jazz fans. Tonight could be a three dimensional cultural exploration.
*Board member and long time JazzEast supporter, Art Irwin, sent us a note the other day. It's about his recent jazz cruise to Spain and Portugal and a show in January. "We... flew to London with a group of approximately 50 people from Toronto. This group...had a reserved section in the dining room and all of the musicians were scattered with us each evening for dinner. In fact, Peter Appleyard and his wife joined us three mornings for breakfast. The group (Peter Appleyard, Guido Basso, Dave Young, John Sherwood and Kevin Dempsey) performed for us on five occasions while at sea between ports. Karin Zorn has a fine voice and went over very well. Peter Appleyard is amazing. At 82, he can still cut Flying Home, Perdido and many others at a heck of a rate. He sat in on drums and piano the last performance and can hold his own with those half his age. He went on to Switzerland for five performances and left us in London. He will be in Halifax in January to perform with the symphony. John Sherwood will join him as well." -Artie Irwin
*Our gypsy-music treasure from Newfoundland, Duane Andrews, has released a cool documentary called Raindrops: A Mini-Documentary. Everyone can watch it right now by going on-line.
*Sanctuary Trio's CD release party cancelled. If you noticed, their concert was listed with my email signature. Jeff Reilly informed us last week that due to an exciting opportunity for him, the date is no longer possible. We'll keep you informed.
*In case there are some arts admin people on this list, here is a job notice. The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia seeks a new Executive Director. Send your covering letter and résumé by Monday, 5:00 PM, December 14. The details are in the link.

02. LAILA BIALI AND STING | AN EVENING IN BLUE UPDATE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like Sting, so I think it is cool that Laila Biali recently came back to Canada from recording with him for a new DVD and from playing with him on a NYC tour. She was with Sting on Late Night with David Letterman, The Today Show and The View in late October and is performing with her trio at the Adi Braun - Metropolitan Room in the big apple this Monday, November 16th.
Do you remember her from JazzFest 2008? She was the opening act for local darling Holly Cole and she performed later that night, in a more casual atmosphere and attire, at Stayner's. Everyone I know who has an ear for vocalists and who loves piano players are enamoured by this triple threat (she composes, too).

In the distant yet near future: January 2010
Canadian New Music Forum 2010 - Halifax is this year's host of the annual new music conference and concerts. Paul Cram, Lulu and I attended last year in Toronto and it was fantastic! The people, the ideas and the music were all inspiring and smart. This year's theme is diversity and programming. I think ALL arts in the Maritimes should take part in this forum.
