Love Notes from The Lion (Day Three) and Cancellation Alert

Review of Friday, March 25, 2011 - Quatrain have played together many times before, but not for a few years and not with last night's guest drummer, Jake Oelrich. They had hardly any time to rehearse and yet managed to pull off a relaxed and superpro concert. It was impressive. There was a surprising connection that is not always guaranteed to be present with a group that is not used to each other's language and habits. Lulu believes their paired friendships had something to do with it. Chris and Dustin play together a great deal and Peter and Jake--both in Muskox--are very familiar with each other as well. Slide Pete in there as the common link and hey presto there is some jazz magic on stage.

The audience seemed extremely pleased with the choice of compositions as well as the performances. There were Pete's pieces from Quatrain recording days, an Ornette Coleman piece and some Duke Ellington to name a few. The latter name prompted a cute exchange between Pete and his parents. Apparently, the Duke performed in Halifax in 1972 and the Johnstons had gone to seen him. Well, the father had seen him, as the family story goes. Throughout the concert, they had been dancing, but Mr. Johnston positioned himself facing the band the entire time.

Unexpected connections are the best.
