Swingology
Artist profile
Official Bio
Nova Scotia’s classic gypsy swing band takes you back to Paris of the 1930s, a time when swing was king, when American audiences danced to the swing rhythms of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Tommy Dorsey, and way out West they two-stepped to the Western swing of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys ...
... and in France the unlikely combination of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli created the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. This great band infused the swing music of the era with the sounds of the gypsy camps and the rowdy Parisian dance halls to create a unique style unmatched for its driving rhythm, inventiveness and excitement.
Swingology is dedicated to bringing the Hot Club style of music to new fans in Nova Scotia and beyond. Our songs range from classics of the swing era to popular tunes and movie/TV themes of today, all done in the irresistible gypsy swing style. Stephen Cooke of the Chronicle Herald says of our music, “The songs are all familiar, but Swingology freshens them up with enough personality and humour to make you anticipate each new interpretation.” And from Stan Carew of the CBC: “Swingology's new album is a gem...the wonderful music of Django and Stephane Grappelli played with heart, soul, verve and imagination, with a few surprises, too.”
Our first CD Swingology was selected as Music Nova Scotia Jazz Recording of the Year in 2008 and also received an ECMA nomination. And our second CD, Under Paris Skies was honoured with nominations by both Music Nova Scotia and the ECMA.
The members of Swingology are Ben Robertson (guitar), John Tetrault (guitar), Andrew Kent (violin), and Andrew Connolly (bass). We’ll also be featuring some of our very special friends. Come on down for a swinging’ time!
